Propaganda is one the biggest tools used to promote the falsified idea of white superiority. When some hear the term white supremacy, it is automatically linked to physical warfare. However, as Sun Tzu states; “All warfare is based on deception.” Propaganda can be divided into two types: positive propaganda and negative propaganda. Both types of propaganda can be used for or against a group of people and the concept of using propaganda to initiate warfare is not a new phenomenon.
What Is Propaganda?
Propaganda, or the Psychology of Coercion, is often seen a derogatory term but has been used to help uplift and empower groups, as it has also been used to disempower groups. It is is defined as ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to help a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.
Propaganda has been heavily studied by psychologists and sociologists, where Herbert A. Simon constructed the theory of cognitive misers. Cognitive Misers explains that if information is given in massive amounts, the individuals receiving the information are forced to make irrational and illogical decisions as quickly as possible. Social Psychologists also study coercion and deception used in everyday life, as The Propaganda Model by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky speaks on biases in media.
How Does Propaganda Work?
Social psychologists study the art of persuasion. Propaganda relies on images and emotions, specifically fear. Because we live in the age of technology and information, propaganda in the form of subliminal messages is much more subtle. The human brain is a computerized memory bank. As images are flashed frequently accompanied with strong emotions, the brain associates certain images with those emotions. This is an example of conditioning. Two types of conditioning studied by psychologists are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. In Classical conditioning, it involves placing a neutral signal before a reflex and focuses on involuntary, automatic behaviors. In operant conditioning, it involves reinforcement or punishment after a behavior and focuses on weakening (or strengthening) voluntary behaviors. However, once the person realizes they are being manipulated, propaganda no longer works.
When Is Propaganda Used?
Governments and militias around the world have used propaganda to recruit people into their wars as well as discourage others from joining oppositional sides. On April 8th, 1904, France and Britain signed the Entente Cordiale 1, a series of agreements forming an alliance between Anglo-Franco governments and agreeing that their common enemy would be Germany. Years later, The United States, already siding with the Anglo-Franco forces, created a recruitment poster named “Destroy This Mad Brute – Enlist” in 1917, by H.R. Hoops, against Germany’s brutal actions in Belgium. Although the woman in the poster is to represent “Nations” as they are referred to as “Her”, she is drawn as a helpless pale-blonde woman in the arms of an Ape-like Beast with a club. This contrasts of a dark giant primate, holding hostage of the lame white woman subliminally feeds the brain messages that the victim of all war is ‘white’ and the aggressor of all war is ‘Black’ or ‘Dark’, dehumanizing the latter. As it is a recruitment poster against Germany, why wouldn’t they present the Yeti/Abominable Snowman instead of a King Kong-like character?
Nazi Germany is another popular example of how propaganda can condition the minds into believing a philosophy. Adolf Hitler studied Gustave Le Bon, a french social psychologist who created theories in Racial Suprematism, Herd Behavior (a collective following without direction, See W.D. Hamilton’s article on the Geometry for The Selfish Herd) as well as Crowd psychology/Mob psychology (crowd behavior versus individual behavior). In Le Bon’s studies, it was found that once individuals formed a group, they would behave in regards to the perceived will of the group instead of their individual will and as the group size increased, the easier it became to coerce the masses. In Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, he lays out a guideline for the art of propaganda:
- Keep the dogma simple. Make only 1 or 2 points.
- Be forthright and powerfully direct. Speak only in the telling or ordering mode.
- As much as possible, reduce concepts down into stereotypes which are Black and white.
- Speak to people’s emotions and stir them constantly.
- Use lots of repetition; repeat your points over and over again.
- Forget literary beauty, scientific reasoning, balance, or novelty.
- Focus solely on convincing people and creating zealots.
- Find slogans which can be used to drive the movement forward.
Although Westerners claim being against Nazism, there are parallels in Hitler’s use of propaganda and America’s use of propaganda. For example, after the 9/11 attacks the slogan “Never forget” accompanies with the American flag and pictures of firefighters and police officers, increasing the need for patriotism. People began to feel more inclined to support the US decisions, including engaging in war.
According to the Pew Research Center:
Veterans who served on active duty in the post-9/11 era are proud of their service (96%), and most (74%) say their military experience has helped them get ahead in life. The vast majority say their time in the military has helped them mature (93%), taught them how to work with others (90%) and helped to build self-confidence (90%). More than eight-in-ten (82%) say they would advise a young person close to them to join the military.
Hundreds of people enrolled in the US military after 9/11, believing they were protecting the country. TSA was introduced and the country was under high alert. Although it is proven that TSA does not prevent terrorist attacks, Americans felt safer as metal detectors and body searches were introduced in airports and other state official institutions. During the Bush Administration, a video series called Portraits of America was promoted all over television. This also increased the patriotism of America, as well as fear while numerous talks of potential attacks by al-Qaeda were shown on CNN and other popular “news” sources.
Propaganda, however, does not only have to coerce people into joining a political party. Subtly, with the help of Western Universities the idea of a ‘white Egyptian” has been slipped into the minds of students. Textbooks have created photosets of white Pharaohs and Black slaves, ignoring the original depictions of very Dark Kemetic people. Egyptology was created by white “scholars” to fill their egos and infantile achievements. So-called historians such as James Henry Breasted, John Gardner Wilkinson, and George Andrew Reisner started the false study of Egyptology with the help of white Universities, who supported the theories and research on racial inferiority.
Not only did they fill textbooks with “white Egyptians”, the names of Kemetic Gods were changed. Kemetic Gods were given alternative Greek names such as Hethert (known as Hathor in Greek mythology), Aset/Auset (known as Isis in Greek mythology) and alternative appearances, as we now see Hethert with pale skin and straight hair. Also, in the National Portrait Gallery, Frederick Douglass is Europeanized, with lighter skin and a narrow nose.
The mass production of propaganda in school has also led to the mass production of propaganda in media, where we see films like “Exodus” and “ Gods of Egypt” are starred by very pale-pink individuals and not “charred” or “Burnt-Face” like the Aithiopes, Nubians or Kushites. Below are depictions of King Tut according to “Egyptologists”compared to a sculpture of a Nubian man.
Negative Propaganda Against Afrakans
Television is one of the biggest proponents of propaganda through (not so) subliminal images. Beauty and the Beast, the story of a white enchantress turns a Prince into a beast after he denies her offering of a rose. This Disney tale has parallels to the novel Beauty Beast written by the same author of the film Mandingo, Mackinlay Kantor.
Literature + Entertainment
Both Mandingo and Beauty Beast tell the tales of a perceived “overly” masculine Black enslaved man from the Mandinka (Mandingo, the misnomer) tribe of Mali. It is described as “[a] book was about a white female slave-owner who bought a mysterious and savage slave, who intrigued her.” Throughout the story line, he is forced to engage in fights which he always wins and show his Afrakan masculinity. However, he is predictably emasculated when he is forced to engage in sexual activity with a white woman and killed by her husband. Disney is known for slipping subliminal messages in their films and cartoons where Nazi symbols and phrases are shown throughout the Lion King.
King Kong (mocking the life of boxer Jack Johnson) and the not-so-obvious film White God, are examples of the dehumanization of Afrakans and the idea of white superiority. Scandal and other related televisions teach Black women to run into the arms of white men, regardless of their marital status. It teaches the world that Black women are home wreckers and reinforces the idea that white men will always put themselves first. This promotion of interracial relationships through television shows gives the public a false fairy tale, dismissing the perverted history of interracial relationships.
*See examples of racist commercials here.
Besides television, people are programmed to believe Black is correlated to death or negativity. For example, as Dr. Cress-Welsing brings up on the Phil Donahue show (click here), that Blackness is always perceived as evil. As there is Angel Food cake (white, vanilla) there is Devil Food cake (Black, chocolate). Black magik is associated with evil rituals, Black comedy is associated with gruesome humor. Propaganda does rely on images, but subliminal messages can be transmitted through repetition of words.
Although there is numerous accounts propaganda against Afrakans, I must remind you we were never docile nor submissive. Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s Negro World newspaper has an array of political cartoons and comics used for propaganda purposes. The Honorable Marcus Garvey stated:
The great white man has succeeded in subduing the world by forcing everybody to think his way, from his god to his fireside . He has given to the world from the bible to his yellow newspaper sheet, a literature that establishes his right and sovereignty to the disadvantage of the rest of the human race. The white man’s propaganda has made him the master of the world, and all those who have come in contact with it and accepted it gave become his slaves. The U.N.I.A is now calling upon the 400,000,000 members of our race to discard the psychology and propaganda of all other peoples and to advance our own.. The white man taught that the best of the world was intended for him, and we now teach that all the beauties of creation are the Black man’s, and He is heir to all that God has given to Man.
As we need to expose the truth of Asiatics, it is imperative to speak positively of our own people. We speak of spreading knowledge to the world, but in an age of reality television and noise, it is very difficult to get to those who are heavily conditioned. The best way to break the minds out of their chains is to place the truth into their brains without them knowing. This type of conditioning has been used several times without negative outcomes. For example, phrases such as “The Black Woman Is God” associated with images of Asaase Yaa and other related Goddesses, not only gives information but empowers and uplifts the esteem of our people. We must continue to create positive propaganda, that not only educate on the history and current conditions of our people but give hope and empowerment for the youth.
